Preview Sunset Overdrive – First Impressions

Sunset Overdrive is a Xbox One exclusive game by Insomniac Games. Insomniac is know for their crazy over the top and creative weapons and designs from the Ratchet and Clank series. They look to be bringing unadulterated fun to the console.

Sunset Overdrive can best be described as Prototype with guns. The demo starts in an amusement park and you are immediately rushed by dozens of monsters. You have eight weapons of destruction and mayham to fight off the endless wave of monsters and to complete the objectives.

Your main character has the ability to utilize the environment to his fullest. You can slide and grind on ropes and rails to move away quickly without having to worry where you’re going. You can run across and up walls and climb up easily to reach higher vantage point and you can bounce off cars for massive jumps. You have a melee attack that causes tornadoes that follow afterwards.  When you switch between weapons time will slow down for you.

The demo has you run backwards and shoot a lot. The monster are seemingly endless and will swarm you. You always have to be on your toes because you would be surprised on how much damage you take. Fortunately most if not all weapons have some sort of homing or aim assist as it’s hard to shoot if you’re constantly moving or grinding on rails. You tools of destruction are varied. Most are just for damage and crowd control but there is one weapons that leaves some sort of drink that attracts the monsters. There was one larger miniboss enemy. It was more aggressive and resistant to the freeze gun but not immune. The end of the demo has you grind on a roller coaster and shooting and pursuing while in motion.

Sunset Overdrive is a game that is always at an action level of 9 or 10 and occasionally hit 11 in big encounters. What I’m worried about is if this game actually is just Prototype with guns. Prototype was a fun game at first but it had little variety and just got more tedious and exhausting. The variety in Ratchet and Clank is what made the series great. You have the tools of destruction but that was maybe less than half of what you did in the game. I can’t tell from the demo but I hope it doesn’t turn out to be a game exclusively full of combat levels and missions. With this much style they could do a lot that I can’t even think of.
