I’ve never been a big fan of the Tomb Raider series. It has been getting better over time, the reboot was a step in the right direction and Rise of Tomb Raider looks to be exciting. Surprisingly my favorite Tomb Raider was its spin-off from 2010. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a downloadable title that capture the essence of what I feel is a Tomb Raider game is in a sizable package.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

Lara sets off to find an ancient mirror of legend and as per usual she isn’t the only one. The mirror is mishandled and releases the Keeper of Darkness Xolotl and his demons upon the world.. The Guardian of Light wakens from his slumber when the Keeper of Darkness was set free and he has to team of with Lara to stop Xolotl.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is an action puzzle game with an isometric view. The game is broken up into short levels where you have to look for treasure, fight temple dwellers and survive traps and hazards. Lara mainly uses her signature dual pistols and the Guardian uses his spears but both can pick up heavier artillery to deal with the creatures, people and demons that surround them. Each level has time and score goals as well as hidden treasures to obtain throughout the game. The game can be played single player or co-op, with co-op requiring Lara and the Guardian’s abilities to complete levels. Co-op players also compete for the highest score in the level.
Guns, the ultimate bug spray.
The game is fast paced and action packed. Combat isn’t too difficult but in when dealing with their sheer numbers and the amount of traps, surviving while going fast provides a fair challenge. The puzzles are creative and some are quite challenging, requiring problem solving, speed and dexterity to complete. The game makes use of vertical space well and is used in puzzles to a great degree and for hidden areas and treasures. They also do away with the climbing and turns it into a 3D platformer which speeds up an already fast paced game.
Why should you get it?
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is possibly the best Tomb Raider game. It takes the exploration, combat and puzzle elements of the series and does away with whatever slow the console games down. It has the absurd combat, it’s has vast levels with plenty to explore and traverse and it has moderately challenging puzzles. The game doesn’t do much for Lara’s character but it doesn’t matter. This is a short and simple story that stays as long as it needs to as to put you back into the game. This is definitely worth your time.
