Remember when Wario was in his own games that weren’t a collection of minigames? In 2008 Wario Land Shake it was a great return to form. On an adventure to save the Shake Dimension, Wario takes off to find as much gold and treasure for himself…
Wario Land Shake It
What is it?
Wario Land Shake It brings the series back to its 2D platforming roots. Wario games play differently than Mario games. Wario isn’t harmed by simple contact with enemies, they bounce off his modest… girth. Unlike previous Wario Land games, you can die in a level. The old mechanics of enemies changing Wario’s state to get to solve puzzles is gone. Enemies with sharp objects or how use the elements can harm him. Wario can easily defeat enemies with a shoulder charge or butt stomp but the levels are designed so that you need to manipulate your enemies. You can pick up and throw enemies to reach out-of-place areas to trigger switches, break blocks or strategically place them for later use.
The game is divided into 5 worlds with several levels and a boss fight. On top of finding money, each level has hidden treasure and challenges. The treasures are usually in sight but require some problem solving to reach. The challenges demands knowledge of the level, good reactions and a bit of trial and error to achieve.
Money, money, money, money, money!
The game makes good use of motion controls. As the title suggest you will be shaking the Wiimote to empty out cash bags and take everything out of an enemies pockets. The tilt controls to aim enemies and cannons isn’t the best way to approach but it’s functional. The shaking does get tedious with amount of times you have to do it if you want to complete the gold challenges but it’s not a deal breaker by any means.
The game has a traditional 2D look but the sprites are very sharp and holds up even today. The game has a lot of good visual effects like the lighting or the way that different layers of the background shake at different levels.
Why should you get it?
If you want a classic 2D platformer from Nintendo that you aren’t sick of seeing then Wario Land Shake It is for you. This is a different kind of platformer, incorporating a lot of puzzle and problem solving elements. There’s a tone of collectables and challenges for completionists that will keep you busy if you’re up to it.
