It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these but since Paris Game Week just past, now was a good time for new trailers.
Shadow of the Beast looks like God of War with aliens. It looks to be a 2D sidescroller beat-em-up with a brutal looking main character and a ton of violence. We’ll see how this turns out.
PlatinumGames seems to be working on everything nowadays. NieR: Automata is their newest project and is a sequel to Square-Enix’s action adventure game NieR from 2010. I haven’t played the original myself but I’ve heard that while it wasn’t perfect it was fun. Since PlatinumGames on development and with Square-Enix’s over-the-top designs are on the game this could be a standout in the future.
I always have to wonder about these games. Boundless is an open world or worlds sandbox game which doesn’t tell you how the game will play. It’s selling itself off the fact that it has several different worlds and environments that you can visit seamlessly and looks a bit like MineCraft. Well a lot of games can take you to new and different worlds all the time, it’s not that big of a deal. It’s still early to criticize but people have been burned before by games that sell themselves off of trailers like this.
Battlezone is a PlayStation VR game and will probably be great for the handful of people who buy PlayStation VR. Even if it wasn’t Battlezone has a good visual style but seems like it would be limited in depth and content.
Avicii|Vector or whatever it’s called looks like a mix of Audiosurf, Switch Galaxy Ultra and a bit of Velocibox. It’s a great trailer but we’ll have to see what it’s really bringing to the table. It reminds me a several games that I have already but with the resurgence of rhythm game this game could thrive or be buried.
I almost don’t want to bring attention to Detroit: Become Human because it’s a Quantic Dream game. David Cage has good intentions but his games tend to lack. They’re outdone by lesser looking games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us and Dontnod’s Life is Strange. Aside the point, Detroit: Become Human this looks like it’s a realization to Quantic Dream’s Kara tech demo that looked fantastic. It was a short movie about and Artificial Intelligence coming to “life” immediately gaining sentience and even fearing her mortality. I honestly think that Quantic Dream will mess this up as a game but I would like to see how good their games will look on the PS4.
I generally don’t have too much to say about racing games but the Need for Speed franchise either needs to stop or do something new and different. It isn’t a great racing sim, Midnight Club out did it as an arcade racer back in the day and they made a movie for a series that doesn’t have that much weight in gamers minds anymore. There’s not much to say about the trailer other than it’s high production values. Lets hope that they can standout from the pack again.
