As stated this is the first Nintendo Direct since the passing of Satoru Iwata President and CEO of Nintendo. This Nintendo Direct marks off the end of this year and the first half of next year with a strong and health lineup of new games, sequels, remakes, amiibos and surprises. Love them or hate them, there’s something here for everyone.
THE BIG NEWS
The Direct begins with footage of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD + Wolf Link and Midna amiibo bundle releasing March 4 2016. This will mark the 30th anniversary for the Legend of Zelda footage and the segment ends with a brief shot and mention of the new Zelda for Wii U. The Den of Trials will be a new area with a 30+ stages. Later in the Direct was Hyrule Warriors Legends for the 3DS which will feature five new characters: Toon Link, Tetra, King of Hyrule, Skull Kid and an original character Linkgle the female Link.
Splatoon announced their free updates from now until January. Some have been unlocked already. The update will feature new game modes, tons of new weapons and gear, 8 new maps and team and private matchmaking. It’s great to see this much support for the game without paying extra.
Pokemon had a fair amount of news today. Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is Pokemon’s newest game in their randomly generated dungeon crawler will feature all 720 Pokemon in full 3D. Pokemon Picross will be another free to start game from Nintendo. Picross is one of those newspaper puzzle games that actually isn’t in any newspaper I’ve seen, which is a shame. It’s essentially pixel art turned into a puzzle game and is addicting. It has micro transactions but as long as it doesn’t have a energy system I don’t mind. The Tekken team is developing their newest fighting game, POKKEN TOURNAMENT. It’s a 3D fighting game featuring Pokemon. I doubt it will be as complex as Tekken but that’s probably for the better. Finally, the generation Pokemon games will be released digitally, now with wireless functionality to trade and possibly battle across.
A new Wii U bundle will include Super Smash Bros 4 and Splatoon. The box states that the games will be pre-installed, however, the console is still capped at 32GB so space is still an issue. A few months ago GameStop stated it will stop selling consoles that offer digital games instead of physical copies of the games it offers. I don’t know if this went into affect but at least Nintendo had the decency to install the games for you instead of having people download them on their very slow eShop. It’s handy to have these two games digitally though. You may not play them all the time but you may come back to them often. There also looks to be a new 3DS XL bundle with Super Mario 3D Land.
Star Fox Zero gives a release date of April 22, 2016 after its delay early this year. No new features have been announced.
Fire Emblem Fates is actually three games: Birthright, Conquest and Revelations. Birthright and Conquest features the story from each army. Revelations apparently is a companion story for both games. I’m aggressively against this money gouging model and their confusing price reduction model. Thankfully, there is the Special Edition that will have all three games with an artbook and 3DS pouch.
The most exciting piece of news is Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud will be the next DLC character for Super Smash Bros 4!!! The trailer shows a lot of Final Fantasy VII love with the battle and variou themes playing in the background, a look at Cloud’s original and Advent Children outfits and Chocobo costumes for Mii characters. The trailer shows off Cloud’s moveset in typical Smash Bros fashion. His A moves are similar to the various sword fighters in the game but his B moves are Cloud’s limit breaks and look great. The sword fighters have a tough time in competitive play in this game but he does have Blade Beam for a projectile and if anything, he will be fun to play.
The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes – Den of Trials & two new outfits
