Ratchet & Clank has been in a weird limbo for a few years now. A Crack in Time was intended to be the final chapter in the duo’s story but we kept on getting games. All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault were spin-off games, Into the Nexus was a shorter game that felt more like an epilogue than a full game and they have been in cameos and characters in several other games. To help promote the upcoming movie at the end of April, the original Ratchet & Clank has been remade and it is the team’s first game on the PlayStation 4. With a few changes to the game’s plot and structure, does Ratchet & Clank stand tall in this next generation of gaming?
Oh boy, it’s back baby. Fallout 4 isn’t the biggest surprise ever but we always want confirmation. We see glimpses of the past before the bombs dropped, the protagonist speaks and there’s a dog again. These are only speculations of what the game might feature but we can imagine that this post-apocalyptic future that’s stuck in the 1950’s will maintain the witty writing and humor that the series if famous for.
At the Toronto Comics and Arts Festival 2015 (TCAF) I played various games in various stages in development. I have a soft spot for rhythm games and after seeing LOUD on Planet X is was interested. Developers Pop Sandbox are currently running Kickstarter campaign and aiming for release on PS4, Vita and iOS. They currently have 9 popular indie bands on board and it has a unique personality and gameplay that other rhythm games that could have the same songs don’t have.
Drew and the Floating Labyrinth is one of several Canadian developed games that I saw during TCAF (Toronto Comics and Arts Festival) 2015 this past weekend. Out of all of the games I saw, this was the most visually appealing with its minimalist look and hand drawn style of the main character and most of the visuals of the game. This game was successfully greenlit from Steam Greenlight in 2014 and was demoed at TCAF for a little more PR. After solving one of the most difficult levels in the game (after seeing that no progress was made in over half an hour) I really wanted so see what the whole game had to offer. Does this Greenlight game live up to expectations upon its full release?
Kirby Canvas Curse was an early DS game that really took advantage of the touch screen as a primary controller. It was a very unique game but fit Kirby and his world and sadly wasn’t revisited until now. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse brings Kirby’s rolling adventures back, bigger and better than ever, sporting a new art style to boot. Will this return be a success or is the game cursed to fail.
I play a lot of video games and I have the bad habit of buying more games before finishing the ones I have. I decided to take a honest look at my uncompleted collection and had to shake my head a bit. One of my new year’s resolutions is to finish as many of these games as I can and try not to be so distracted by trophy hunting.
For those of you curious of what games these might be I’ve compiled some lists.
Resistance: Fall of Man was a flagship title for the PS3 during its launch. It was a new IP meant to show off the power of the console. The game use old PC FPS mechanics channeled Ratchet and Clanks unique weapons and interrelated them into the game. Resistance 2 was a misstep, adopting modern FPS conventions and didn’t do much to stand out anymore. Resistance 3 went back to its roots and built up making it the strongest of the trilogy. Even though it the end Resistance 3 is the best one and catches you up with the main events of the series and does more than both of them did.
I’ve never been a big fan of the Tomb Raider series. It has been getting better over time, the reboot was a step in the right direction and Rise of Tomb Raider looks to be exciting. Surprisingly my favorite Tomb Raider was its spin-off from 2010. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a downloadable title that capture the essence of what I feel is a Tomb Raider game is in a sizable package. Continue reading →
